SealantsAlthough only 12.5% of all tooth surfaces are chewing surfaces, these surfaces develop more than two-thirds of the total cavities experienced by children. A sealant is a white, resin material that is usually applied to the pits and fissures of back teeth. Sealants act as a barrier, protecting the enamel from bacterial plaque in cavity prone areas. Sealants are easy and painless for our dentists and E.F.D.A.'s to apply, and it only takes a few minutes to seal each tooth. The ideal time to apply sealants is when the permanent tooth has first erupted into a child’s mouth. ½ of molars that erupt into a child’s mouth which are not sealed will eventually become decayed. During your regular dental check-ups, our dentists will check the condition of the sealants and reapply them if necessary. |
